School day

Santo Domingo de la Calzada is celebrated on 12th May, and is considered to be the main forerunner of many civil works in the locality which takes the same name and hence it is the patron saint of civil engineers. Since most students have their final exams in May, this festival is usually moved forward to March or April.

At this event, students and professors participate in different activities and competitions in a playful and informal atmosphere.

Activities

Activities normally carried out at this event:

  • Chocolatada. To kick start the event, all attendants have a chocolate and churros breakfast which shall give them an energy boost for the day.
  • Sports competitions. During the event there are mixed category football, volleyball and tug of war leagues etc. Also the annual competition for men and women´s test tube toss is held.
  • Migas (breadcrumbs fried in garlic) competition. Different teams compete to make the best migas every year. Once they are made, the judges taste the ones made by each team and decide on the winner. Once the competition is over, they are served and constitute a large meal for all participants.
  • Desserts competition. The different teams bring the desserts they have made and anonymously the judges taste them and choose the winner. Afterwards, the attendants taste the different desserts.
  • "Road killer". This is a game in which the participants kill off the other ones. First, they are assigned someone they have to "kill", but the game really consists in putting a peg on their targets without them realising and gradually, the number of participants falls until the only one left wins. This competition is carried out in the weeks running up to the Day of the School.
  • Other competitions. The days before the event there are competitions for photography, tweets, memes, etc.
  • Prize giving. There is an event after all the competitions for prize giving for the day.

Every year new ideas arise and hence new activities, so each edition is different.
