CAROLINA FOUNDATION

The Carolina Foundation is an institution for the promotion of cultural relations and cooperation between Spain and the countries of the Ibero-American Community of Nations, particularly in the scientific, cultural and higher education fields. By virtue of its public-private nature, its investment in human capital and research, and the relations it maintains with Ibero-American foreign ministries and academic institutions, the Carolina Foundation is a unique instrument of Spanish cooperation in favor of scientific progress, institutional strengthening and academic mobility to promote the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2005, the framework collaboration agreement and the first specific agreement between the UCLM and the Carolina Foundation was signed to co-finance five scholarships for doctoral studies. Since then, both institutions have continued to collaborate and have called for different postgraduate and doctoral scholarships on a co-financing basis, with the aim of generating social value in the environment of the beneficiaries to contribute to a fair response to the current challenges of the "triple transition", digital, ecological and social.

In the 2026/2027 academic year, 8 postgraduate scholarships have been announced for four master's degree programs, grouped in different areas of knowledge. Specifically, the programs are:

University Master's Degree in Environmental Sustainability in Local and Territorial Development (INDITEX). 2 scholarships
University Master's Degree in Experimental Biomedicine (RAMÓN ARECES FOUNDATION). 2 grants
University Master's Degree in Research in Artistic and Visual Practices. 2 grants
University Master's Degree in Innovation and Development of Quality Food. 2 scholarships

Requirements

To be a beneficiary of the scholarships, it is necessary to be a national of a country of the Ibero-American Community of Nations, except Spain.

Doctoral scholarships are intended to encourage teaching staff at Latin American universities associated with the Carolina Foundation to obtain a doctoral degree. In all cases, it is the Latin American university or educational institution associated with the Foundation that must nominate interested individuals to the Carolina Foundation.

A doctoral program can be undertaken at those Spanish universities that have signed an agreement with the Carolina Foundation and in all academic areas, except in the two cases where the Spanish university limits the doctorates that can be pursued (see section “Benefits of the scholarship”).

The scholarship will enable the recipient to obtain a doctoral degree.

These scholarships are based on a co-financing system, established in bilateral educational cooperation agreements, inspired fundamentally by the principle of equal opportunities.

For the 2026/2027 academic year, the Carolina Foundation is offering 40 new doctoral scholarships and 114 renewals of scholarships from previous calls.

The benefits of these scholarships are:

- Monthly scholarship for accommodation and living expenses.

- Five round-trip economy class airline tickets from the capital of the Latin American country of residence, one per academic year. The purpose of each ticket is exclusively to allow the student to arrive in Spain at the beginning of the stay and return to their country of origin once it has ended.

- Tuition fees for the student

-Non-pharmaceutical medical insurance

-Note: The Carolina Foundation will cover the cost of economy class airfare and medical insurance necessary for the reading and defense of the doctoral thesis in Spain during the fifth academic year from the start of the scholarship, if this has not been done within one of the periods established above. The scholarship recipient will be responsible for the fees for issuing the degree.

Doctoral scholarships are based on a co-financing scheme involving the Carolina Foundation, the scholarship recipient's home university or institution, and the Spanish university of destination. Without prejudice to the provisions of the cooperation agreements, the co-financing system is as follows:

On the part of the Carolina Foundation:

- 5 round-trip economy class airline tickets

- Non-pharmaceutical medical insurance.

- The amount of 600 or 480 euros per month, depending on the public or private legal nature of the university or institution in Latin America, during the scholarship holder's stay in Spain.

From the UCLM:

- Scholarships: €2,400 per month

- Tuition fees

Scholar's home university:

- €400 per month
