Research areas

The main research areas developed by the Wind Energy and Power Systems Department are shown in the present Section

IER’s Wind Energy and Power Systems section is primarily aimed at long-term research on integrating wind power into the grid, systems with high wind penetration and integration of hybrid systems with other renewable energy sources and energy carriers.

In this way, the main research lines in the short to medium term are as follows:

Research areas

Electrical modeling of wind turbines

In order to accurately determine wind turbines responses to events that take place on the grid, its electrical behavior is studied. Furthermore, to ensure the reliability of the wind turbine simulation models, the IER has a test bench composed by two 30 kVA electric generators, in addition to a pilot plant of 2 MW that is currently being built.

Modeling of renewable energy plants

This line is addressed from two sides:

The first seeks to integrate the wind turbine models produced within the previous research line into simplified aggregated wind farm models to simulate their response to network events. It also aims to study the behavior of electrical networks including these models.
The second aims to reproduce the fluctuations of the power produced by one or several wind farms due to the stochastic nature of wind. One of the objectives of this type of model is the prediction of power fluctuations in an electrical system where wind penetration is greater than the current one.

Operation of electrical systems with high penetration of renewable sources

This line aims to optimize the operation of electrical systems with high penetration of renewable sources of electric power, predominantly wind energy. To this end, various techniques to reduce the disadvantages of low manageability of such resources are studied:

Active power control techniques to reduce the power fluctuations of aggregated wind farms
Frequency control in networks with isolated or weak interconnections.
Hybrid systems to maximize renewable energy production.

Predictive maintenance

Development of predictive maintenance methods, based in condition monitoring techniques, used in renewable energy sources (mainly wind power). Analysis of field data, diagnosis and prognosis. Implementation and comparison within the experimental facilities in the Renewable Energy Research Institute.

Energy Efficiency

Tasks related to energy supply and assessment of the efficiency of an installation are complex and high time-consuming. However, a relevant added value is gained by the entities who take them into account. Specifically, within the lighting scope, since it accounts for about 19% of total global electricity consumption, research projects in fluorescent lighting and LED lighting have been performed. The consumption of these technologies has been optimized taking into account both daylight and electrical parameters.

Smart grids with distributed generation

Modeling and simulation of solutions for Smart Grids, through studies of frequency control in power systems with a high penetration of renewable energy sources (wind energy and photovoltaics especially). Moreover, the study of the contribution of the demand-side to the primary frequency control, as energy storage, is of particular interest.

Meteorological, electrical and mechanical measurements. Tests

This line of research provides to the previous lines with the data, measurements and tests which are needed for their proper development.
